10 First Aid Techniques That Could Be Harmful and Make Things Worse

It is necessary to learn basic first aid for everyone because you don’t really know when you could be facing an emergency yourself or because of someone else such as friend or family. The problem is that many feel that they may know certain first aid procedures but these could also be wrong.

Administering incorrect first aid could cause more damage than good and without knowledge of helping an injured person, things could get worse. Here is a list of the fairly common mistakes people make while trying to administer first aid.

1. Make sure you or the patient is not in danger

Whenever an emergency warrants instant action, check a person’s pulse, breath and the size of the pupils in light and dark.Large dilated pupils indicate danger because of no response.A drastic change beyond or below those points need emergency action. If there are no signs of life, perform a cardiopulmonary resuscitation immediately.

2. In case of severe bleeding

In the case of bleeding, immediately applying a tourniquet is not advisable. The first thing to do to stop the bleeding is to clamp down on the artery which is closest to the wound. Once you have done this, apply a compression bandage from sterile wipes if possible. If the wound is too deep, stuff it with the wipes. Then when fixing the bandage apply a tampon along with it.

3. For nosebleed

The biggest mistake people make is keeping the patients head back. Even when you suffer from nosebleed, do not hold your head back. Instead, make the person sit and then tip the head slightly forward to allow the blood to flow. With your fingers, apply pressure on the soft part of the nose for upto 10 minutes and not more. The person should then spit out the blood to prevent vomiting.

4. In case of hypothermia

The main mistake people make when someone is experiencing hypothermia is rubbing the body with Vaseline, oil or even snow to increase the body temperature faster. A person should always be placed immediately in a warm environment or a room. The body parts that are frozen should be covered immediately. Make sure the person’s clothes are dry and then wrap them in a warm blanket. Keep supplying them with warm drinks and hot meals. A meal will also increase body temperature because of food oxidation.

5. In case of cardiac arrest

The biggest mistake people make is to perform the same safety aid for people of any age. Different ages require different fort aid actions. Perform an indirect heart massage with two hands. With the base of the palm, press on the chest while the thumb should face the patient’s chin or legs.
In case of teenagers, perform this same procedure but with the entire palm. When performing an indirect heart massage on a baby, use two fingers only.

6. In case of a burn

When you get burnt, do not apply oil, or rub vegetables on it like tomatoes. It does nothing for the burn. Moreover, oil will make your skin degenerate faster when burned. It is common sense because that is why we apply oil to food to make it cook faster.
Moreover, don t remove clothes immediately or pierce burn bubbles. Burn blisters or bubbles are the body’s own first aid response to prevent damage and lubricate the burnt area which is why a bubble is formed and filled with liquid. That is your body’s protection mechanism.

7. Airway obstruction

The biggest mistake people make is attempting to use the Heimlich maneuver while trying to save an unconscious person. If the person is unconscious make them lie down on their back and sit on their hips. Then place your hands on the coastal arch and apply pressure downwards. Now turn the person on one side and try to remove the foreign object from the person’s mouth with your fingers but cover your fingers with a cloth first.

8. If a child is choking

When a child is choking place them on your left forearm. The head should be facing down and thump the back thrice but not too hard. Then grasp their legs and turn them upside down. If a woman is pregnant and you use the Heimlich maneuver, then press above the rib cage.

9. In case of poisoning

The main mistake in case of poisoning is not giving the patient any water. You can wash out the stomach of a person who has been poisoned by making them drink at least 10-20 cups of plain water. After that give them 2 cups more and the water should spill out. To induce vomiting, use just 2 fingers to press on the base of the tongue.

Repeat the process till the water comes out clear. If the person is unconscious, do not proceed with gastric lavage.

10. For dislocation

Many make the mistake of trying to put the joint back. Don’t ever attempt to do this. Only an x-ray will reveal the type of dislocation. The only thing you can do is to immobilize the person and do now allow him to move the injured part. Don’t try to bend or unbend the limb or joint.

Use a flat or narrow object to tie up the injured part as well as the nearest joint to immobilize the injury. Make a lengthwise brace with bandages but exclude the injured part. You can also press the leg and tighten it to the other leg. Remember not to tie the bandages too tightly because it may obstruct circulation.
